First class upgrade for companion fare?

I just tried to buy two tickets with a companion fare certificate.
It let me buy the tickets, then offered me a paid upgrade to first class.
I believe it shouldn't have let me do that because that supposedly isn't allowed with companion fare tickets.
What it actually did was let me buy the upgrade, telling me that I was getting two first class tickets for the price of one.
Then when I paid for the tickets, it said they were main cabin tickets.
Chatting with a support agent did no good. He kept repeating that the companion ticket fare doesn't allow first class tickets to be purchased, but couldn't explain why I was charged the first class upgrade fee.
I canceled the tickets and will rebuy them once my companion fare certificate is refunded to me in 10 days or so.
Has anyone run into this before, and is there a way to upgrade tickets with a companion fare?

There is a suggestion in the fare rules that this might be possible. Here's a quotation from the rules for the companion certificate:

"Mileage Plan: Mileage Plan credit applies and upgrades are allowed."
