That is the reality of SA. Unless you really know the neighbourhood, I wouldn’t be walking after dark or driving around that much either. And it’s defo best to be dressed down and not wave expensive consumer electronics or jewellery around.

That said I spend a couple of months each year in SA, mostly near Kruger with a bit of time in Johannesburg and an annual road trip (eg Wild Coast) So far the worst that has happened are a couple of speed camera fines at Middleburg!
