We too are planning a trip sometime Mar/Apr next year and besides safety warnings, we are reading about rolling power blackouts in Cape Town and that the situation has worsened significantly over the last few months. We intend to spend 5 days in/around CPT, drive the Garden Route over another 5 days and then spend another 5 in Kruger.
But to come back to safety/security, we would like to understand whether it is truly a situation where one is perpetually looking over the shoulder. Across various forums like FT, Tripadvisor, Reddit etc. I have come across multiple regular, and most one-time visitors saying the same thing - it is fine to go, but.............
Unfortunately that BUT seems to be much bigger for SouthAf than for other places - do not use a camera, do not walk after sunset, avoid being alone on the roads, check with locals which roads are safe to drive, be careful on hikes in/around Table Mountain etc. There are odd reports of incidents inside Kruger too!
The previous post also says most of these same things.
Those are the things which make us wonder. Hence, any more light on the situation would be welcome. Thanks
