Yes they could be used for more advantageous offers but the earning rate is still zero.

Especially when the goal is to fly in business or First class.
I'm referring to the opportunity cost of earning Avios rather than MR points or points in another FF/hotel scheme, or cashback.

If you want to fly in J or F then FF points are likely to be the best option, but you can't be sure without properly assessing the options.
