I’m not advocating for doing it in segments. Clearly tagging it all the way through is best. IME, inability to do this doesn’t matter for connections in the US.

You bring up a situation I haven’t experienced which is arriving after bag cut off. FlyerCO mentions LAX geography issues, which I also haven’t experienced (my I->D connections have been at airports where this hasn’t been an issue).
