Just came here to share my horror story... was on 3 different EWR to SFO flights, waited around at EWR for 7 hours, and finally left to go back home at 8PM. My flight ended up boarding 20 minutes later and left at 9PM, just my luck. Re-booked onto 6:30AM EWR to SFO today, woke up at 4:30AM, was pulling up to EWR around 5:20AM and got a notification the flight was cancelled. Went back home and gave up on the trip. Meanwhile B6/DL/AA are doing great on their JFK to SFO flights.... United seems to be having a meltdown this week.
On the positive side, they proactively send me a $500 e-credit.

Not as a defense of UA exactly, but over the past couple of days the storm parked over New Jersey. So while every NYC airport was heavily impacted by ATC delays, EWR took the worst of it with storms on their doorstep all day.
I'm no airline apologist, and have no insight regarding if/how UA could have handled things better, but I'm not surprised that UA (with a hub at EWR) is taking a heavier hit than the other airlines that use LGA/JFK primarily.
