You're probably better off considering QR or SQ if you want a good experience from the US West Coast, and consider using an alternate airport (BUR, SNA, ONT) to connect at a different gateway as you probably won't be able to pick up a codeshare starting at LAX.

I have no issue using any of the alternate Los Angeles-area airports you mentioned, but I'm not clear on how that would help. I'm operating under the assumption I need to take a transoceanic flight on a US carrier (to Tokyo, Singapore, London, Frankfurt, Paris, etc etc), then maybe have the option to connect from there to India on an international first class (Emirates, Ethiad, Qatar, Singapore, etc.) for the remaining budget under the cost cap. I would expect those transoceanic flights to be less numerous and more expensive out of the smaller airports... what am I missing?
