Why not just apply for a Schengen visa, which as a Canadian PR, should be easy enough?
Then there will certainly be no issues at TK check in.
Yes, that would be best of course. Unfortunately there is just not enough time... the Danish embassy in Canada says that it currently takes "up to 26 days" to get a visa, and we're leaving in one month. The risk of not getting the passport back in time for departure is too big.

Although it doesn't explicitly mention the onward flight has to be on the same ticket, this is way too risky IMHO. The airline flying Turkey-CPH may not view your friend as a transit passenger, because as far as they're concerned, their obligation ends in CPH.

Check out a similar thread from earlier this month about issues with self-connecting through the Schengen zone. Different airlines, but same principle.
Denied Boarding for Zurich Self Transfer - What are My Options?

AC does allow PRs to enter their card details at OLCI and get a BP generated (usually), but that doesn't override the point above.
Yes, I checked Timatic also, I would argue that having the boarding pass and PR card is enough to qualify for "have documents required for the next destination". But of course there's still a risk. But I think this one is not that big.

It works well from Europe, from the US I'm often told I need to go to the counter but I suspect that is mainly due to United handling the airport counter (and United self-serve checkin systems don't understand PR cards). Just make sure your friend enters the PR number on the top right on the back of the card (mine starts with PB), not the 8-digit ID number on the front. It's a classic mistake which will result in a "please go to the counter" message.

Good luck
this is very useful, thank you!

Yes, it was very strange and unexpected (even shocking) for me also. I always assumed that one could get a boarding pass at the gate. In this case the gate agents in Istanbul called the other airport the check it and were told that the second airline used an outsourced handling service who could not generate the boarding passes at the gate. Unfortunately the denied boarding ruined the trip for the person.

I'll be traveling with the person so this isnt a big risk.
