I'm not sure of the points here. My general experience in Europe, Middle East, and Asia is that the passport is the 'go to' form of ID as many guests do not have a driver's license. The only country, within the past 5 years, out of 40+ countries, is Italy at vacation rentals where a copy/photo of the passport was required by the lodging for 'government purposes'.

I like the passport card idea.

That said, my passport has far less personal identifiable info than my driver's license. In the US, I use my GE card or my passport at check-in as an ID.
