It means you can get whatever is left. You may get lucky and be able to change to something better, or you may get a middle or last row etc if the flight is on the full side, or may not even get a seat assignment until at the gate.
With a Basic Econ ticket, don't expect anything more than a middle in the back... so if you get something better consider it a pleasant surprise.
This is exactly how I would look at it. I also think it's worth a shot to get there early and check with the gate agent. You just might get a seat that pleases you.
