I don't know if they still do this (I haven't purchased BE in quite a while) but they used to send an email a day or two before the flight with a buy-up offer, so keep an eye out. Otherwise, per your plan, check in at T-24h, and check the seat map quickly for something better if you don't like the initial assignment.
