This is my experience as well- if you choose a seat beforehand and want to switch, the app and normal seat selection says changes only available at check in.
However, I have seen a workaround. If you login to MMB on a desktop web browser, you get a banner at the top that says something along the lines of "Adjust seats for this booking", which takes you to a simple looking seat selection page.
