This is where the program gets interesting. With Hawaiian Airlines, any ticket purchase can be upgraded for a fixed number of points provided there is either type of upgrade space available – and I really do mean any ticket – even Basic Economy.
(for a link to the article, google "pointsmilesandbling intriguing way to fly to hawaii") (I can't link to the article b/c I haven't posted here 5 times or more yet )

I'm going to attempt this exact redemption tonight... 2x Main Cabin Basic w/ 50% off companion fare, call into HA and upgrade to `P`. I'll update this thread with the results!
Want to call out that this info is NOT accurate... Main Cabin Basic cannot upgrade to FC (or any other class for that matter). Trusting this info cost me a buuunch of time because I basically needed to cancel my Main Cabin Basic reservation after the HA agent told me I couldn't (this was easy peasy), BUT, what took forever was getting the HA 50% Companion ticket discount re-issued by HA for me to use... (~6 hours on the phone w/ multiple HUCA to get them to honor a re-issue of that this companion cert that wasn't actually used in the originally cancelled res).
