A summary of my recent experience:
At KIX, there was a weight check at the check-in counter. I was wearing 10 kilo of clothes, medicine bottles in my jacket and a laptop in a thin plastic strap bag beneath my shirt and jacket and coat. Passed that. Then no gate check-in. At KUL, I went to the Document Check desk, no weight checking there. I had the boarding pass already. At the beginning of immigration, there was a scale and almost everyone checked for weight.

Also I skipped a flight and that did not hurt me. At KIX they asked me for my onward ticket which was from KUL to CCU , they did not bother about the missed flight etc. And the reason I did a missed flight was A->B->C was cheaper than A->B. It is called hacker fare in kiwi.com
