I don't understand why the slides were deployed only after the aircraft had returned to the gate. If there was an urgent need to evacuate, couldn't the evacuation occur before the aircraft returned to the gate?

If the evacuation appeared to be disorderly, I wonder whether it was the passengers who decided to open the doors and hence activated the slides.

The behavior of the passengers taking their hand luggage with them during the evacuation does not surprise me at all.
