My last 2 rentals a couple months ago were both with Hertz and were pretty beat up cars with high miles, one I had to return same day as it had an exhaust leak, windows didn't roll up all the way and 60k miles on the odometer.

I have 2 trips coming up that I don't want to get stuck in a car that i am paying through the roof for that they likely bought at a used car auction... so which company tends to have the newer fleet right now?

Talking US fleet, upcoming rentals will be in Phoenix and Nashville.
