Final verdict: IAH to AMS was a no go. I was however able to upgrade into business class on C from AMS to CPT. That option showed up around T-4 hrs to departure. Upgrade price was 599 Euro (this was partially offset by the $160 USD i spent on an economy comfort seat. Also note that my employer paid for the flight initially.)
