Done MAN-LHR-LAX too many times to count. As others have said, security can be a right pain. The MAN-LHR shuttles are also often delayed/cancelled. The train is a good option if you don't have a lot of luggage, it can be difficult to manage on the train/tube. I've taken to driving to a Bath Road hotel the night before. It's more expensive but it eases the stress.
