FWIW, after that original response from Concierge, I asked again, and they did end up saying they held a space on AC7773 YUL-YYZ tomorrow and that if I missed my connection to "please call us on the Concierge line letting know that you have a non-exchange space on hold that you would like to exchange in order to get you on your destination in time tomorrow."

Glad this wasn't necessary but still nice to know they would have done something. Thanks for everyone's input!
So in the end the Concierge did help you out and protect your travel plans despite the way you booked your travel so maybe this now needs to move to the "Thanks Concierge" thread?
