Unfortunately the best plan was to have all the contingencies planned out in advance. For a trip this long, when you are likely allowed 24 hour layovers, originally buying an earlier MCI-DTW would have saved you a bunch of stress. Being proactive instead of reactive in managing risk will help tremendously in the future. Especially when upgrades are involved.

It's a tough lesson. I am sorry you had to learn it first hand.
