10 Days in Tunisia & Algeria cost us under $1000 for the two of us (flights were all award). We've splurged on trips where we found it necessary to splurge that are more "once in a lifetime" trips and that we felt impossible to do properly for cheap. I didn't feel like a self-drive around Kruger would have been worth perhaps our only chance to do a safari in a very long time.
Wow! I hear you on the "once in a lifetime" trip list. We were (maybe over) optimistic and hope to visit Africa again. That said, I confess (I believe I have mentioned this up thread as well) that I was unaware of the riches of Botswana (Chobe and Okavango) until after we returned from Africa. Even our Victoria Falls visit was more like a value add to the South Africa itinerary for us.
