Sometimes there are $1k one-way tickets on cities that are 200 miles apart, and have a 25% earn rate. Sometimes there are $59 one-way fares on cities that are 1k miles apart, and have a 100% earn rate. Some tickets even have a 0% earn rate. Unfortunately there are so many factors (many opague to the consumer) that go into setting fare prices.
As others have pointed out, MileagePlan has a published table for AA fare classes and their corresponding earn rates. Hope this helps.
