I would have headed for the nearest SkyClub and sought assistance there. You got screwed by Delta booking two pax into one seat, and Delta should make it right for you. I realize that the SkyClub ambassadors don't have as much power as they once did, but it has been my experience that they can help you, and I have gotten help there over the years.
