Delightful Hotel in Sidi Bou Said
Introduction Maison Dedine was a delightful little B&B style hotel in Sidi Bou Said, right by the sea and about 10 minutes by taxi from the ruins of Carthage and 20-30 mins from the Tunis Medina and the rest of the attractions near the city centre. Room We were assigned the Superior Sea View Room on the left side of the property -- there are, of course, no room numbers as there are only 5 rooms. The view is stunning, and the rooms are thoughtfully designed (if a little small, but not uncomfortably so). I'll let the photos speak for themselves on this matter. The common areas of the hotel are also quite nice:Main Sitting Area View over pool from conversation pitConversation pitPool (a bit cold for my taste, even in mid-June) Service There is no way to describe the service other than delightful. Ons, the assistant manager, assisted us throughout our stay, and was extremely helpful in arranging whatever we might want, including spa services (which were lovely, but limited to massages given the size of the hotel). The hotel also provides a smartphone in the room with the mannager and assistant manager's contact information preloaded into WhatsApp and the Bolt app (think Uber) for when you're out and about, which I found thoughtful for guests who might not wish to use roaming, though I ended up simply using my own phone for both of these purposes. Dining Given its small, almost B&B-like size, the hotel does not have a restaurant or room service. Breakfast is served downstairs, with a spread of Tunisian and Western options, and was quite nice. Location The hotel is located about 10 minutes by taxi from the ruins (and modern town) of Carthage, and 30 minutes from Tunis's medina and airport. We were there in mid-June, and were delighted to find the ruins of Carthage (which are vast, plan enough time to see all the different sites and travel between them!) nearly deserted. The hotel itself is seaside, with a beautiful view and infinity pool over the water, but do note that it's not possible to swim directly from the hotel as the shore there is rocky, you would need to walk 100m or so to the public beach area on the street. One other thing to note is that the hotel is located on a small road, where a taxi stand would likely require a walk up the steps (300 or so, I believe) to the town of Sidi Bou Said itself, so I would reccomend calling for a car. The setting of the hotel is quite beautiful:From the street by the hotel From up the hill (it really is a lot of steps!) Overall Overall, I would reccomend Maison Dedine as one of the best hotels in the area, especially if you're looking to be by the sea. There is also a Four Seasons several kilometres away, but we eventually opted against staying there as it is a much larger property, and further from Carthage and Sidi Bou Said, which were some of the most unique and beautiful sights from our time in Tunis.
