As much as it IS in black and white in the T&C, they actively push you to do the online check in... and it's not until you find a full-service hotel that actually completes the checkin process before arrival that you get burnt.
I'm going to follow the suggestion elsewhere in this thread and reach out to IHG to try to address this obvious oversight.
