I assume you were flying (international)-JFK-ATL? (Especially since that is the only way it could have been a Virgin codeshare.) If not, SkyTeam rules do not require that status give lounge access on a purely domestic itinerary. (Unlike Star and oneworld, which do require it generally but give specific carveouts for UA, AA and AS members.)
