It's only a couple of hours longer on the train up to Manchester than to Heathrow, so this might be viable.
Yes, this is correct. 'Repricing' after dropping the last leg is very rarely done even on cash fares, and in any event an Avios redemption to LHR costs no more than one to MAN.
Of course, it wouldn't work if you had checked luggage, unless you managed to get an itinerary that involved an overnight stopover in LHR...
