This is really interesting. I've been checking daily for amex extra availability for Business from LHR to Tokyo at some point this September, but there is a bunch available from Manchester. I know I'd 100% have to start the outbound in Manchester (which, given the current domestic cancellations is a little scary), but if I opted for a stopover at Heathrow the on the return, presumably I could just skip the final leg of the reward flight, and come home direct from Heathrow?
It's only a couple of hours longer on the train up to Manchester than to Heathrow, so this might be viable.
