Same thing happened on my LAX-CLE redeye flight last week.

Flight started boarding late at at T-24. No GA was at the counter and they still hadn't cleared the last F seat, for which I was number 1 on the list. 1Ks were lined up and when I approached the GA from the side about GS boarding she said to wait until she was done with the 1K line. Knew I'd be in for a fun night then.

When I was allowed to board I asked about the last F seat and the GA said the computer should have already cleared them. When I pushed back on that based on the app, she said to just board and she'd deal with it later, but I asked to wait until it was cleared. A GA went to the counter at T-12 to clear it, I refreshed and number 5 on the list was given the last F seat.

When I pushed for an explanation, they said a Silver bought an upgrade and was already onboard. Really bizarre and the GA seemed all too pleased to inform me of that.

And of course they fill the middle seat of my row with standbys rather than the row in front of me or behind me. Remember the days when UA would assign seats next to 1Ks last?

It's pretty incredible how AA treats EXPs better than UA treats GS these days. Better upgrade odds and better treatment.
