the mechanical itself wasn’t the problem; ETOPS is all about reliability and redundancy

they weren’t yet in ETOPS conditions over PHX, so after the failure they weren’t legal to begin that flight regime … had it occurred an hour or so later over the ocean, they would have *probably* been able to continue to HNL

paging @LarryJ or @GagaPilot or someone who can speak to the actual language in the FAR or airline ops spec
