For OP, please note that it is possible to do an upgrade all the way through (requires O+O availability) or only upgrade one of the two segments (requires only O availability for that specific flight). The amount of miles depend on the original fare purchased, if your employer paid a low fare class (e.g. T, X), I think the upgrade mileage is almost the same as booking a reward ticket (52.5 k compared to 55 k).
The amount of miles required to upgrade is fixed, and no matter what dynamic pricing a new ticket goes, as long as it has O inventory, you can do the upgrade. See my previous post here:

Is this true? I've had different prices quoted for AMS-KGL vs. KGL-AMS on the same booking and same initial booking class. I am plat so maybe there was O availability for the first one and Z for the second one. But also other upgrades I've taken seem to have fluctuated wildly in price compared to this..
