I would never fly with my family to NYC or any other place on a long-haul flight during the day.

Here are some examples:
In the past, as a family, we flew to the US with TK to MEX, immediately short circuited to the US, and returned via NYC. All long-haul TK flights were overnight. Only because IST-MEX was overnight, we considered flying with TK. No overnight flights; no TK for us.
This year, I will fly with TK to NYC only because I have free E+ vouchers to spare. The rest of my family will fly overnight with UA both ways. No overnight flights; no TK for my family.
Next year, we'll fly together as a family to NYC with UA overnight both ways. No overnight flights; no TK for us.

I know I'm a single person with only a few data points, but maybe there are more people like me who would rather fly other carriers than TK because they don't have an overnight flight to NYC. And I'm not just any person. Most of my travel is with TK. Usually, TK is my first choice.

And if there are other people with my flying patterns, maybe they too won't consider flying TK to NYC, and this is what is called leaving money on the table.
