The reverse sometimes happens too, where 2 flight with a stopover are less than either flight alone. I believe this because when you put in A-B/stopover/-C that the AS booking engine actually prices A-C. It’s hard to test but if A and C are close together and B is much further away, the short segment A-C pricing will often wind up showing for A-B/stopover-C.
