If/when I return to Bangkok (and didn't want to pay the exorbitant Intercontinental rate), I'd look into the Kimpton that is located very near the Crowne Plaza.
While the Kimpton is a much nicer, newer building and therefore things don't break down so much, I don't think it's worth the money by any stretch of the imagination. For example, the Crowne Plaza's pool is a little cool, with walls protecting it from all sides, but the Kimpton's pool is really cold, as it is almost entirely shaded. It's pretty, so I guess it's there for Instagram pics. The Kimpton's afternoon drinks is also pretty lame (significantly worse than the Hilton Sukhumvit, for example) and it's further from the BTS than the CP. I'm not planning to go back to either of them.
