Or at the actual border. The customs agents can ask for passports/identity papers at any time.

All in all, don't expect much to change at Swiss land borders.
Was checking this to see if Switzerland was Schengen (since I always forget EU vs. Schengen) and as I was reading this it reminded me of last year I was on a train from Italy to Switzerland and at the first Swiss stop guards got on and checked IDs.
They were random but I was one of the lucky ones who was checked granted soon as they saw the US Passport they didn't even bother opening it but the guy across the aisle from me who was not an American passport holder, they questioned him for a good 5 minutes before carrying on.
