The airline people I eventually had the privilege of speaking with were helpful and sympathetic so credit to them.
Apparently I might have been able to have the matter addressed on Tuesday afternoon but the Baggage Services desk for Rex is inside the secure area of the terminal. I would not have been able to get to them with my bag due to its contents (ie, sharps).
So there is still a fail that that airline needs to look at.
