No, usually you must checkin for all sectors but it is reasonable to ask for luggage to be ‘short checked’ only to KUL. You could say you have a gift to extract from the bags, or a change of clothes.

Indeed, you may have to collect you checked bags in any case at KUL for customs/immigration check. Worth asking others about the current practice?

Anyway, once in KUL lamdside with your bags, you can then checkin for separate flight KUL-XXX.

It would be appropriate to advise the airline at some stage that you are unable to make the KUL-JHB flight.
