If you stay in A and Z FRA is actually a surprisingly nice airport. A little too crowded in the old part during busy times, but at least that keeps the distances short. The problems start once you need to leave that area indeed. LHR despite all the bad rep it gets I find surprisingly nice if you stay inside either T2 or T5, which the only big downside being the mandatory security check on connections. But that's a UK government decision, not something LHR can fix on its own.
