"Thanks for checking your bags" - but I didn't

I checked in with the app for a flight several hours beforehand. About three hours before the flight, I got a text thanking me for checking a bag. It was in the normal template for when I have checked a bag, with my confirmation and a bag tracking number. Except I didn't check a bag, and I wasn't anywhere near the ticket counter at the time.

When I then viewed my reservation, it showed a record for the bag, with it accepted at my departure airport at about the same time I got the text. It all stayed that way for about an hour, but before I could ask an agent at the airport about it, the bag disappeared from my reservation again. So I left it at that and didn't try to have anyone look into it.

I'm curious, though, about what went on behind the scenes to correct the record and banish my phantom bag. Anyone had this happen before? Couldn't find any posts, but not sure what to search.
