I suppose calling might preserve the fare, tho probably won't change before the EOS window moves.
Well it’s “free” if the same booking class is available (eg, “I”) and the new itinerary meets the other restrictions on the fare, most likely day of week (some fares are only valid, say, Tues/Wed) and/or seasonality (eg, only valid March 1 through May 31). If not then it will need to be re-fared but they can use the historical fares at the time of ticketing. So a day of week change probably wouldn’t result in that significant of a fare difference, but seasonality could.
I’d also be concerned about the validity of the ticket and the maximum stay requirements if you’re intending to return after end of schedule. I think most tickets must be used within 1 year of issuance? (Or is it 1 year from departure?)
