I have to say that I have tried to get free web-based messaging to work on numerous United flights, always without success. WhatsApp and Messenger just hold your message but don't actually send it, even though the United Wifi instructions say they should when you're in airplane mode. On Delta, on the other hand, WhatsApp works just fine.
Weird. I’ve only used iMessage buts it’s worked fine every time.
