This thread is just such a good reason not to go on holiday in the US. Not just the credit itself but the whole attitude in the service industry whereby the guest is made to feel like the establishment is doing them a favour by being open.
As an American I loath vacationing in the US now. It's universally overpriced and poor service is the norm, everywhere, to one degree or another.
When I can't go further afield, I'm fortunate enough I can frequently escape to Canada where Montreal and Quebec offer a distinctly more European like service, at significantly better prices.
