Post-pandemic I am only now beginning to travel with 2 young kids. In the past, all my travel was solo or as a couple. Current status: Plat.
I reckon that travelling with 2 adults + 2 kids, most hotels would require me to book 2 rooms. Does it make any difference to upgrade chances and Plat benefits if I book [1a/1k + 1a/1k] or [1a/2k + 1a/0k]? Do properties ever upgrade such 2 room bookings to a single 2 room suite, or would it always be a Suite + a Room?
Before people start guessing... the answer to your question can depend on the region you stay in (as there can be different national laws regarding room occupancy), the brands and maybe specific target hotels you aim to stay in, and the specific ages of the children because this detail is material. So can you provide some more detailed and specific information in these areas? Then you may get some useful answers that you can action.
Regarding upgrades, as a Plat you will only be upgraded and receive other Platinum benefits in the one room you are staying in according to the T&Cs. Individual hotels may extend some benefits to both rooms but YMMV and you cannot expect it. But it's a bonus if they do. Of course, how you arrange the four occupants is up to you on the ground. If one room is upgraded to a two-bed suite and you'd clearly not need the second reserved bedroom then it would be up to you to clarify this with the individual hotel if such a situation happens on or slightly before check in. Some people here have reported the ability to cancel the second reserved room. Others not. Depends on the situation on the day and the hotel.
