In my case, it looks like it's well worth it. It will pay for accomodation on a forthcoming Asian trip.
I have indeed taken into account the extra 3000 reward points more than the Explorer. For the second year the threshold would be at EUR 37167.

Of course, for a high spend it makes sense. The Ultimate has some extra perks too depending on how much one values those.

By the way, are the card's special rates with breakfast and EUR 50 credit included worth it or are they always overpriced compared to the public rate?
