I had a slightly different circumstance as you - 4 of us in the back, we pushed 2 through at T-72, but the two had to include me (the GS). I actually wanted to give my wife the upgrade but they wouldn't let me.
They told me the GS had to be part of the request at the time.
Not an exact mirror of your situation, but I imagine they might say they can't do the T-72 since you're not part of the request.
