UA connecting to SAS Baggage Fiasco
I was on UA 122 (IAD to LHR) on Tuesday June 6th. I was intending to spend the night at an airport hotel and connect to an SAS flight to OSL the next day.
I checked a bag because the nature of my trip (Svalbard cruise) requires significant amounts of winter clothes. Because the layover was about 14 hours, UA would not let me check the bag through.
Well, there was a problem with the plane and between that and the LHR curfew, we arrived 11+ hours late. While waiting, I tried to get my bag retagged all the way to Oslo. At least 3 agents in the UA club said they sent messages to the baggage people.
On arrival at LHR, I checked with the SAS desk and was told the bag was transferred to them. But, on arrival to OSL, it wasn't there. I filed a report and the person assisting me said it was still at LHR.
I'm hoping to get it tomorrow, but have low confidence in that. Had I known it didn't get retagged, I'd have collected it at LHR and almost certainly ended up missing my OSL flight, but there was would have been options later in the day. My questions are:
1) why was it so hard to get the bag retagged?
2) what compensation (beyond that for the delay itself, which is already taken care of) would be appropriate to ask for if the bag doesn't show up tomorrow. (Cruise departure is early Friday morning.)
3) All of the rescheduling options UAshowed me for the delay addressed only the LHR part. I'd have been fine routing through other European hubs. Is this a known bug with the app?
