I can’t speak for other posters, but I wasn’t blaming the OP for anything. Yes, UA screwed up and ought to compensate the OP for their miserable performance.
I was merely pointing out the reality that United‘s current level of operations suggests that having a back up plan in mind for a once in a lifetime trip would have been a prudent move to make. These days, every trip I plan on any airline always has a back up, ready to go.
