Bear in mind that while the Lötschberg tunnel car shuttle runs up to 8 trains per hour depending on demand, the Simplon tunnel shuttle is only every 90 minutes or so. Then again, the Simplon pass is not difficult to drive at all, especially in Summer - only a few hairpin turns, and great views (weather permitting)
