This left me baffled. If there is availability to offer a late checkout for money, shouldn't there also be availability to offer it for free as a member benefit? Did the hotel handle this correctly?
Check-in at Hotel Indigo NYC Financial District is from 4:00 PM, and check-out time is 11:00 AM.
So, by offering you a check-out time of 12.00pm, they're doing you a favor.
Why charge you for a late check-out? Because the hotel business model is to make their occupancy rates profitable. But also because a late check-out may require cleaning staff to stay longer to clean the room up.
That's why they "remunerate" loyal customers by providing additional services (since loyalty translates into higher occupancy).
