I'm so sorry to hear this.
I was recently at an event with a consular official that said that Barcelona was #1 in Europe for passport theft. It's quite sad. Per the consular officer, all indications point to organized crime syndicates from Eastern Europe.
It's happened to be before- twice- and it's awful.
